** Insolvency - Maryland An Act was passed for the relief of sundry Insolvent Debtors. Among those who had petitioned for relief were John J. Sothoron of St. Mary’s Co., and Thomas L. & Zachariah Sothoron of Charles Co. In addition to various documentation, each petitioner was to give up all possessions except clothing & bedding of himself & his family. (Arch MD 192:279 {JG#4:308}, 1803.01.08) Zachariah Sothoron petitions for relief under Act of General Assembly entitled "an act for the Relief of sundry Insolvent debtors", giving up all real & personal holdings, requests naming of trustee. Assets include 100 acres left him by his father, 1/24 of a lot in Benedict Town, parcel of old lumber & one old plank table. Creditors include Francis Sothoron 30 s., John J. Sothoron 30 s., Gerrard Briscoe £20. - Charles S. Smoot of Charles Co. named trustee with bond of $1,000, but declined. - Miley Harbin appointed trustee 22 Feb 1804, with $1,000 bond. - Deed for land (not otherwise identified) transferred 6 March 1804, recorded IB#6, 52 - Letter from Zachariah Sothoron, possibly in his handwriting, from Alexandria, DC, to Mr. Samuel H. He entered duty as a Pvt. In Capt. Henry Ruth’s Co. Of Light Inf., 1 (Col. Magruder, Lieut. Col. Thompson) Reg’t, District of Columbia Militia. He entered duty July 15 and was present for 12 days. - He is also present on the same Company Pay Roll dated 26 July 1813, serving from July 15 to 26, 1813. Pay per month was $8. He entered duty 17 May as a private in Ensign Moran’s company, Capt. Ignatius F. Gardiner’s detachment, 1 (Hawkins) Reg’t Maryland Militia, for an expedition to St. Mary’s Co., MD. He served until May 18 (2 days) and was paid 53 cents.
